Biology & Conservation
The Red Squirrel – sciurus vulgaris – is probably one of Britain’s most popular native species, largely due to detrimental effect the invading Grey Squirrel has had on Red Squirrel numbers. In Britain they are only surviving in coniferous woodland where Grey Squirrels cannot so you tend to only find them in Scotland and parts of the North of England. It is estimated that there are only 140,000 Reds left in Britian compared to almost 2.5million greys leaving them with an uncertain future. As a supporter of the Wildlife Trust and the Woodland Trust’s Carbon Capture Scheme, Sarah Gee Fine Art sales are helping to conserve and protect our Red Squirrels by planting more native woodland, controlling Grey Squirrel populations and taking part in reintroduction schemes.
Famous squirrels include Scrat from the Ice Age movies and Beatrix Potter’s Squirrel Nutkin.
